| Godess Sri Maha Prithiyangara Devi |
Puranas depict different ways of origination of Maha Prathiyangara Devi. Some say that Prathiyangara Devi emerged out from the third eye of Sarabheswarar (manifestation of Lord Shiva) with 1,008 lion faces , 2,016 hands and a blood-stained tongue protruding out. She helped to reduce the ferocity of Lord Narashima.
There is also another version that when all the Gods were helpless to appease Lord Narashima , Goddess Parvathi Devi ,Saraswathi Devi and Lakshmi Devi created Prathiyangara Devi and sent to appease Lord Narashima, who was fiearceful after he killed(Samharam) the Demon King Hiraniyakasipu.Only after Prathiyangara Devi sat on Lord Narashima′s thigh he calmed down.
There is also another belief that in ancient time when two rishis namely Prathiyangira and Angiras, discovered a goddess through a Moola Mantram while they were meditatng Later the goddess privileged the rishis by naming her after them and hence she was called as Prathiyangara Devi.
Narasimhika is her another name. ′Naran′ means human and ′Simha′ means Lion, so she appears with Lion′s face and human body.It is also said that she has destroyed the arrogance of the Shiva′s ugra avatar ′Sarabhewarar′. It is believed that when Narashimhika shakes her mane ,she shambles the stars in the universe.
Prathiyangara Devi is considered to be a powerful repellent of the influences generated by witch-craft. In Sri Chakra worship, she protects her devotees against all odds and guides them along the right path. She is enveloped as bliss in the letter "Ksham".
Appearance of the Goddess :
In some image she is shown as dark complexion, terrible in aspect, having a lion's face with reddened eyes and riding a lion or wearing black garments, she wears garland of human skulls; her hair strands on end, and she holds a trident, a serpent in the form of a noose, a hand-drum and a skull in her four hands. She is also associated with Bhairava, and she has a variant form viz. Atharvana-Bhadra-Kali.
Atharvana-Bhadra-Kali :
Prathyangira Devi she also has another name Artharvana Bhadra Kali because she is the guardian of our Atharvana Vedam , the vedam which holds the secret of Mantras Tantras Yantras from good to evil. Her Character is straight forward, if you do mistake no forgiveness she punishes right away.
Homam for the goddess is done on a new moon day(Ammavasi). The main ingredient for the homam is dried red chillies.
